10 tips for an unforgettable wedding speech

Slow it down

Your audience would rather listen to someone who radiates calmness and talks slowly. Your speech is easier to listen to and therefore more fun for the guests. There is also less chance of choking yourself or getting out of breath.

Prepare yourself for annoying guests

Maybe some annoying guest is talking through your speech or someone makes a nasty comment. Prepare a comment that you can make during your speech to shut that person down, but remember: keep it light and funny.

Practice

Practice the speech in front of the mirror. Are you really insecure? Film yourself and watch it back. Thanks to this method you can improve the speech. Do not forget to speak your words out loud. Maybe the speech sounds sublime in your head, but when you actually pronounce the words it could sound a bit different. Practice your story a minimum of five times out loud.

Tell a story

Of course it is important to practice, but you do not want to memorize the whole speech word by word. Your wedding speech need to be sincere: tell a story and do not just read the words. It is all about the message you want to tell the newlywed couple. Speak from the heart.

Take a moment for yourself

It is wise to take a moment for yourself before the speech. Go to the toilet and breathe deeply. Think about the message you want to convey.

Take a break

A break makes your speech better. Take a break every now and then to let your message settle. Some people will become emotional.

Body language

Your speech is not only about words. The story could be strengthened by the right body language. Move your hands and open yourself literally. Do not stand with your arms crossed to prevent your message from losing value.

Don’t get stupid drunk

Do not ruin the speech by drinking too much alcohol. How unfortunate when you can’t remember this important moment in your life? So try to stay (reasonably) sober.

Show your emotions

Afraid, nervous or uncertain about your speech? Do not be afraid to show these emotions. Your shaking hands will be a lot less when you know that the guests understand it. Even when you get a little misty: you do not have to swallow the tears.

Keep your own style

Are you a person with a great sense of humor? Then a speech without a joke will not suit you. Always remember that you are the storyteller.
